16 Fires Recorded in North Cyprus in One Week: Reported Damage Exceeds TL 1.2 Million

According to figures released by the TRNC Fire Brigade, 16 fires were recorded across North Cyprus between 31 August and 6 September 2026. Fire crews also responded to 19 special service incidents during the same period.

The total reported financial damage caused by the fires was TL 1,235,300.

Probable Causes of the Fires

The Fire Brigade’s report identified the following probable causes:

• Electrical short circuits

• Fires lit for cleaning purposes

• Cigarette ends discarded before being fully extinguished

• Gas build-up

• Sparks caused by electrical cables coming into contact

The 19 special service incidents included fire-prevention measures, rescue operations, special duties and transfers to hospital for judicial investigation purposes.

The Significance of Weekly Fire Data for the Insurance Sector

The number of fires recorded during a single week does not, by itself, show the full economic loss. The reported financial damage represents the amount identified during the initial assessment. Detailed examinations of buildings, machinery, stock, vehicles and third-party property may produce a different final figure.

For the insurance sector, the cause of a fire is considered alongside its location, the way the damaged property was being used and the official records prepared after the incident. An electrical fire at commercial premises and an outdoor fire that spreads to surrounding buildings may fall under the same general incident category, but result in substantially different claims.

The figures covering 31 August to 6 September show that the fire risk in North Cyprus did not disappear with the final days of summer. Electrical faults and fires associated with human behaviour continued to appear in the same weekly record.
