Eastbound Morning Glare on the Coastal Road
Location: Esentepe Coastal Road | East–West Axis | 07:15–08:30
Between the bend below Alevkayası ridge and the long straight stretch before the public beach turnoff, the road runs directly east–west. In the early morning, the sun rises over the sea and sits low on the horizon. Drivers heading west toward Girne encounter direct glare at eye level.
The risk exists because the road encourages steady speed. It feels open. There are no immediate buildings or tight curves to signal caution. However, visibility drops sharply for several seconds at a time as the sun reflects off both the sea and the windshield surface.
Time pattern matters. This glare is strongest between 07:15 and 08:30, particularly in late autumn and winter when the sun’s angle is lower.
A common scenario occurs when a vehicle slows to turn toward a side access road leading uphill into one of the newer villa clusters. The following driver, momentarily blinded by glare, misjudges the deceleration. The distance appears sufficient. It is not.
