Karaoglanoglu Coastal Road – Late Sunset Glare Near Escape Beach Junction

Karaoglanoglu (Karaoğlanoğlu) coastal road faces directly west along the stretch approaching the Escape Beach junction. This orientation is not incidental. It defines the risk window.

Between 17:15 and 18:45 in winter, and later during summer months, the sun lowers across the sea line and aligns almost directly with westbound traffic. Visibility is not removed. It is altered. Contrast weakens. Brake lights blur into the horizon. Lane markings lose edge definition.

The exposure forms at the Escape Beach right-turn approach.

Three movements converge at the same point:

• Through traffic continuing toward Alsancak
• Vehicles slowing to turn right into the beach entrance
• Vehicles exiting Escape Beach and merging into westbound flow

The road remains straight and open. That openness delays behavioural adjustment.

The critical factor is timing distortion. Drivers maintain corridor speed because the geometry still reads as transit road. When a vehicle ahead begins decelerating for the right turn, the brake intensity is often underestimated under glare conditions. Reaction remains normal, but perception is fractionally delayed.

That fraction is enough to compress spacing.

A recurring local scenario appears in early autumn evenings. Beach activity continues, but traffic density is mixed between residents and short-term visitors. A westbound vehicle signals right for Escape Beach. The following driver registers the signal but misjudges deceleration rate due to glare flattening depth cues. Braking occurs slightly later than ideal. A third vehicle behind adjusts more abruptly.

No dramatic collision. Instead, a ripple of sharp correction moves through the lane.

Vehicles exiting Escape Beach face a parallel distortion. Looking eastward during sunset, approaching vehicles appear further away than they are. The merge gap feels sufficient. The actual closing speed is higher than perceived.

Season amplifies the rhythm. In summer, the glare window overlaps restaurant arrival traffic along the coastal strip. In winter, it overlaps commuter return flow from Kyrenia toward Alsancak and Lapta. Different user groups. Identical sun angle.

Surface conditions occasionally reinforce the effect. After several dry days, fine sea dust settles along the carriageway. Under low-angle sunlight, the asphalt reflects brightness unevenly. The road appears visually stable even where micro-grip varies.

Historically, before the hospitality expansion along Karaoglanoglu coastal corridor intensified in the 1990s and 2000s, this segment functioned primarily as a transit axis. Today it operates simultaneously as destination access and through corridor. The geometry remained linear. The behavioural load multiplied.

The risk does not arise from speed alone. It arises from delayed behavioural recalibration at a junction embedded within a straight, glare-exposed segment.

As long as westward sunset alignment intersects with mixed-use traffic at the Escape Beach junction, this narrow evening window will continue to produce predictable compression waves along Karaoglanoglu coastal road.
