What Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cover?
Comprehensive insurance assesses physical damage to the insured vehicle arising from sudden and external events while the vehicle is being driven or parked.
Collision
Physical damage to the insured vehicle caused by a collision with another motorised or non-motorised vehicle may be covered under the policy terms.
Impact with a Fixed or Moving Object
Damage caused by contact with a wall, pillar, barrier, kerb, gate, post or another fixed or moving object may be assessed under the comprehensive policy.
Overturning, Falling or Leaving the Road
Damage may be covered where the vehicle overturns, falls, rolls or leaves the road unintentionally.
Parking Damage
Sudden and external physical damage occurring while the insured vehicle is parked may be assessed in accordance with the cover and special conditions stated in the policy.
Malicious Damage
Scratching, breakage, bodywork damage or damage to vehicle parts caused by malicious acts of third parties may be assessed under the policy terms.
Fire
Physical damage caused by fire or other fire-related events specified in the policy may be covered.
Theft and Attempted Theft
Theft of the vehicle, attempted theft, or physical damage caused during an attempted theft may be assessed under the theft section of the policy.
Flood, Water Damage, Storm and Hail
Physical damage caused by flood, water ingress, storm or hail is assessed in accordance with the cover, limits and special conditions stated in the policy.
The exact scope and any applicable conditions are stated on the policy schedule.
0% Excess
CAN Sigorta comprehensive motor policies apply 0% excess to standard comprehensive claims, excluding earthquake cover.
This means that, for standard insured events such as collision, parking damage, fire, theft, malicious damage, flood, water damage, storm and hail, no standard claims excess is deducted, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
Earthquake cover is treated separately.
Earthquake claims are subject to the 80% insurer / 20% insured co-insurance arrangement applied under the North Cyprus earthquake tariff.
Earthquake Cover
Earthquake cover is not automatically included within the standard comprehensive policy.
It may be added separately upon request and payment of an additional premium.
Earthquake cover is subject to an 80% insurer / 20% insured co-insurance arrangement.
This is not a CAN Sigorta-specific condition. It is an industry-wide application arising from the North Cyprus earthquake tariff and is applied on the same basis by insurance companies operating in North Cyprus.
Accordingly, for an insured earthquake loss falling within the policy terms:
80% is borne by the insurer
20% is borne by the insured
The policy will clearly state:
Whether earthquake cover is included
The applicable sum insured
The 80% / 20% co-insurance ratio
Any additional special conditions
The expression “full comprehensive” does not in itself mean that earthquake cover is included. The cover stated on the policy schedule is what determines the actual protection.
Short-Term Extension for Travel in Türkiye
The standard geographical scope of CAN Sigorta comprehensive motor insurance is North Cyprus and South Cyprus.
Where the insured vehicle is to be used for a short-term journey within the Republic of Türkiye, an additional territorial extension may be arranged for eligible vehicles.
This extension is not automatic.
The journey period, vehicle details, use of the vehicle, requested cover and any special conditions are assessed separately.
The duration, cover, limits and any special conditions applying in Türkiye are stated on the policy.
Up to 14 Days’ Replacement Car
For eligible claims covered under the policy, CAN Sigorta comprehensive insurance provides up to a maximum of 14 days’ replacement car in total during the policy period.
The replacement-car service is subject to:
The claim being covered under the policy
The insured vehicle being unusable due to repairs
The vehicle remaining at the repairer
Claim and service approval
The applicable service conditions
The detailed terms of the replacement-car service are stated in the policy or service conditions.
24/7 Live Assistance and Roadside Assistance
CAN Sigorta comprehensive motor policies provide 24/7 live assistance and roadside assistance for situations covered by the applicable service terms.
Depending on the policy and service limits, assistance may include:
Towing
Roadside assistance
Battery assistance
Tyre-change assistance
Assistance following fuel depletion
Assistance where keys are locked inside the vehicle
Transporting the vehicle to a safe location
The number of incidents, mileage limit, territorial scope and other service conditions are stated in the relevant policy or assistance terms.
Fuel costs, spare parts, repair charges or services exceeding the stated limits may be treated separately.
1, 3, 6 and 12-Month Comprehensive Insurance
Subject to vehicle and risk assessment, CAN Sigorta comprehensive motor insurance may be arranged for:
1 month
3 months
6 months
12 months
The policy period is assessed together with the age of the vehicle, current market value, use, driver structure, existing physical condition and requested cover.
Insurance cover does not begin merely because a quotation has been prepared or documents have been supplied.
Cover begins at the date and time stated on the policy.
How Is the Comprehensive Insurance Premium Calculated?
The premium is not determined solely by the make and model of the vehicle.
The assessment may include:
Make and model
Year of manufacture
Current market value
Specification and equipment level
Intended use
Private or commercial use
Driver option
Claims history
Policy period
Additional cover
Physical condition of the vehicle before inception
As a result, two vehicles of the same make, model and year may have different premiums and policy terms.
How Is the Vehicle Value Determined?
The insured value is based on the vehicle’s current market value at the date of insurance.
The assessment may take into account:
Make
Model
Year of manufacture
Specification
General condition
Comparable values in the North Cyprus used-car market
A value that is materially below or above the true market value may affect the assessment of partial losses and total-loss claims.
Foreign-Currency Vehicle Values
Many vehicles in the North Cyprus market are valued in sterling or another foreign currency.
Where appropriate, the insured value may therefore be stated in an approved foreign currency.
The policy should clearly state:
Sum insured
Currency
Claims settlement method
Total-loss valuation method
Any applicable exchange-rate basis
Driver Options
Comprehensive motor insurance can be arranged with different driver structures depending on how the vehicle is used.
Named Driver
The vehicle is used only by the driver named on the policy.
Specified Drivers
The vehicle may be used by more than one driver, provided each driver is specifically named on the policy.
Any Driver
The vehicle may be driven by different drivers who meet the driver conditions stated in the policy.
If the vehicle is regularly used by a spouse, family member, employee or another person, the correct driver option should be selected when the policy is arranged.
The driver structure may affect both the premium and the assessment of a claim.
Comprehensive Insurance Valid in North and South Cyprus
CAN Sigorta comprehensive motor insurance is valid in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and South Cyprus.
The vehicle is assessed under the same policy structure in both areas, subject to the cover, limits and special conditions stated on the policy.
If theft, roadside assistance or another specific benefit has a different territorial restriction, this is stated separately.
Short-term cover within the Republic of Türkiye may also be arranged as an additional extension for eligible vehicles.
Comprehensive Insurance and Third-Party Insurance
Comprehensive insurance focuses on physical damage to the insured vehicle itself.
Compulsory third-party motor insurance covers legal liability for material damage or bodily injury caused to third parties, subject to the statutory limits in force.
The two policies therefore protect against different types of risk.
What Happens After a Comprehensive Claim?
Following a loss, the circumstances of the incident, physical condition of the vehicle and the cover stated on the policy are assessed together.
Depending on the nature of the claim, the following may be required:
General photographs of the scene
Vehicle positions
Photographs of damaged parts
Registration details
Driver details
Third-party details
Date and time of the incident
Police or traffic report where required
Witness information where relevant
The documents and photographs are reviewed after notification of the claim.
An assessor may be appointed where necessary.
Repair method, repairer, parts and settlement are then handled in accordance with the policy terms.
When May a Comprehensive Claim Be Treated Differently?
The following circumstances may require special assessment or may fall outside cover depending on the policy terms:
Driving without a valid licence
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Deliberate damage
Racing or speed trials
Use contrary to the driver conditions stated in the policy
Undeclared commercial use
Use outside the stated territorial limits
Undeclared non-standard accessories
Mechanical breakdown
Wear and tear
Poor maintenance
Pre-existing damage
A material inconsistency between the reported circumstances and the loss
The outcome of a claim is determined by the facts of the incident together with the applicable policy terms and conditions.
