Lawyer Şahap Tokatlı, one of CAN Sigorta’s legal advisers and a member of the Supreme Council of Judicature, has highlighted the potential significance of the Filo Jet disaster for insurance law, maritime law and criminal proceedings in Northern Cyprus.

Speaking on KIBRIS TV’s Gün Ortası programme, hosted by Elif Şen Çatal, Tokatlı said the case could have implications beyond the immediate investigation. It may also prompt a reassessment of vessel inspections, maritime operating rules and navigation standards.

Insurance Law and Technical Evidence

Tokatlı identified insurance law as one of the areas in which the case could have important consequences. He explained that technical assessments concerning the vessel, including evaluations by Türk Loydu, test results and other findings, would be examined during the judicial process.

These findings, he said, would help establish how the incident occurred and determine the responsibility of those involved. His comments did not specify insurance policies, coverage limits or compensation outcomes.

Responsibility Must Be Established Through the Courts

Tokatlı emphasised that the investigation remained ongoing and that responsibility could not be conclusively determined before the evidence had been examined and the proceedings completed.

He acknowledged the profound suffering of families who had lost loved ones, while calling for patience and respect for the judicial process. He also stressed the importance of the defendants’ right to a fair trial.

Lessons for Maritime Safety in Northern Cyprus

According to Tokatlı, the case could become a turning point for vessel oversight and maritime safety standards in Northern Cyprus. Its outcome may provide guidance for shipping operators and inform measures intended to prevent similar disasters.

The judicial process will establish responsibility. The wider significance of the case will also depend on how its findings shape future inspections and operating practices.
