A Bellapais Insurance Timeline: 1953–1967

Lawrence Durrell’s years in Bellapais belong to the public memory of Cyprus.

Between 1953 and 1956, Durrell lived in Bellapais, a village above Kyrenia, during the period later recorded in Bitter Lemons. The house, the village, the monastery, the road down toward Kyrenia and the changing atmosphere of the island all became part of one of the best-known literary accounts of Cyprus in the 1950s.

That part of the story is public.

Alongside it, Can Sigorta preserves a quieter internal archive.

It concerns not the writing of Bitter Lemons, but the practical question that remained after Durrell had left Cyprus:

Bellapais After Durrell’s Departure

Durrell left Cyprus in 1956 during a period of unrest on the island. In the years that followed, his life continued elsewhere, including in the south of France.

But the Bellapais property remained part of the Cyprus story.

According to Can Sigorta’s internal notes and staff recollections, a call reached the company in 1962 from Sommières, France. The caller identified himself as Lawrence Durrell and asked how the insurance of the Bellapais house could be maintained from abroad.

The question was not dramatic.

It was practical.

A house remained in Bellapais. The owner was no longer living on the island. The property still required attention, continuity and local handling.

That is where the archive account begins.

The 1962 Call from Sommières

The internal account describes the 1962 call as the starting point of a careful administrative process.

The caller, identifying himself as Lawrence Durrell, asked about keeping the Bellapais property insured. From that point, the matter had to be handled locally. The property was in Bellapais, the owner was abroad, and the insurance file depended on people who could connect the house, the paperwork and the renewals.

In the company recollection, the process involved three local figures.

Fuat, the house caretaker, helped with on-site details.

Naim Ali, a staff member, arranged appointments and paperwork.

Mr. Norman Smith, remembered as Durrell’s Cyprus-based accountant friend, helped maintain the renewal process.

The archive account records that the insurance of the Bellapais property continued through this arrangement until 1967.

Insurance as Continuity

The value of this archive note is not only in the famous name.

It is in what the file shows about insurance in Cyprus during that period.

Insurance was not only a document. It was continuity.

Bellapais is often remembered through literature, monastery stone, hillside views and the name of Lawrence Durrell.

Can Sigorta’s archive remembers it through another lens.

The house appears not as a literary symbol, but as an insured property requiring continuity across distance. The file connects Bellapais, Sommières, local caretaking, accounting help and insurance renewal discipline.

This is a different kind of history.

It is not the public history of the book.

It is the local administrative memory that can survive inside a company archive.

Norman Smith and Kemal Can

The archive account also records that Mr. Norman Smith passed away at his home in Alsancak in 1995.

Until then, he is remembered as maintaining a close professional relationship and personal friendship with Mr. Kemal Can, the late manager of Can Sigorta Kyrenia.

This part of the story belongs to company memory. It reflects the older insurance culture of Kyrenia and the surrounding villages, where business relationships often lasted for decades and where professional trust was carried through repeated local contact.

In that world, an insurance file was rarely anonymous.

It had names attached to it.

It had people who remembered the house, the owner, the caretaker, the accountant and the manager.
