How do you prevent underinsurance?
1) Insure for the rebuild/replacement cost, not resale price.
Homes/Buildings: Use the rebuild cost, not market value. Include debris removal, professional fees (architect/engineer), permits/code upgrades, VAT, and boundary works (fences, pools, pergolas, solar).
Contents/Stock/Equipment: Today’s new-for-old replacement price.
Vehicles: For Full Kasko, set a realistic current market replacement; classic/modified cars → consider agreed value with evidence.
2) Get a realistic number (no guesswork).
Valuation options: Contractor quote, surveyor’s report, or our CAN Sigorta Rebuild Calculator (we guide you).
Businesses: Create/refresh stock lists and equipment registers with model/serial, purchase date, replacement cost.
3) Add inflation protection.
Apply an indexation/uplift (e.g., 15–30% buffer in high-inflation periods) and review sums insured quarterly if prices move fast.
4) Understand the “Average/Proportional Rule.”
If you insure a home for 60% of true rebuild, a claim may be paid at only 60% of the loss. Ouch. Correct sums insured prevent this.
5) Choose the right extras.
Seasonal stock increase (retailers).
Accidental damage (home contents).
Glass cover; personal possessions outside home; specified valuables (jewellery, art, watches).
Business interruption (BI): Pick a realistic indemnity period (often 12–24 months) and base it on gross profit (turnover – variable costs), not accounting profit.
6) Keep evidence tidy.
Photos, receipts, serial numbers, and valuation letters → store digitally. After a claim, proof speeds up everything.
7) Tell us about changes.
