The risk increases because drivers divide their attention between the vehicle ahead and the cars already inside the roundabout. A short movement by the queue may be followed immediately by another stop.

In a typical case, the front vehicle moves forward, then brakes after noticing a car approaching from inside the roundabout. The following driver expects the queue to continue, reacts late and makes light contact with the rear bumper.

The impact may appear limited to a paint mark, but the parking sensor area, bumper clips and lower boot-lid alignment can also be affected. The defining factor is not speed. It is the repeated stop-start movement and the few metres of distance lost while attention shifts toward the roundabout flow.
